SUMMARY:SIRSY at McGirk's!
DESCRIPTION:About the band (source: helioagency.com) \nThe Boston Globe sums it up\, “Little band. Big Sound.” No more needs to be said. Although the only thing “little” about Sirsy is there are just two of them. The rest is bigger than balls on a buffalo. \nListen to the power in their latest recording “Coming Into Frame”. You can feel it. It’s crank-up the volume music\, even when the heartfelt ballads kick in. And why so much power? Melanie Krahmer on drums and vocals\, Rich Libutti on guitar. That’s why. \n \nAnd\, according to Sirsy a lot of credit goes to Grammy-winning producers\, Paul Kolderie and Sean Slade (Hole\, Radiohead\, Dresden Dolls\, Pixies). According to Melanie\, known as Mel to fans and friends alike\, “Our fans have said that the energy of our live show hasn’t translated onto our previous recordings. They are going to notice a different energy level on this record and it’s because of how Paul and Sean worked with us.” \nDo you know what a click track is? It’s like a metronome and is used in recording to keep things perfect. Some believe it can take away from the spontaneity of a recording artist. According to Mel\, “On some tracks\, Paul and Sean didn’t use a click track on purpose. The result is a few of the songs vary in tempo to suit the mood and energy of the song.” In other words the recording is real. Rich\, the highly talented guitarist for Sirsy says\, “It seems ridiculous to remove tempo changes. Listen to ‘The Cost Of You’. It speeds up at the end. That gives it the intensity there.” \nSo “power” and “real” are the key words to describe the new recording and Sirsy itself. As Aftertaste Magazine said regarding Mel\, “Bursting and belting out emotion and substance\, she can be the queen of ‘in the groove’ rocking or be simple and delicate.” And get this\, she also plays a full drum kit while standing up (she’s been featured in Modern Drummer Magazine)\, handles bass (played on a keyboard with her drumstick)\, and even throws in an occasional flute solo. Rich Libutti plays everything else\, including seething guitar; bass (on a keyboard at his feet); and he is the anchor to Melanie’s on stage tornado. Just the two of them because\, “We never found other musicians who understood”\, according to Rich. \nAnd they write. They write clever\, smart songs that have more hooks than a tackle box. They both write the music. Mel takes care of the lyrics and they might set you back a few feet. They could even be called “dark” which is weird because when you talk with this duo the conversation is usually littered with laughs. But Mel says\, “Calling the lyrics dark is appropriate\, or maybe introspective says it better.” She is a student of the English language and lyrics are a natural art to her. But she studies before the work begins. “I do love to listen to other artists to get inspired lyrically.” Like Coldplay\, or a somewhat obscure Irish band called The Frames. And\, at times when a “more down home feel is needed”\, Bruce Springsteen. \n“I listened to a Jackson Browne tune ‘Shape of A Heart’\,” Mel said\, “and immediately wrote the words to our song\, ‘Gold’.” “I didn’t take anything directly from his song\, but it set a mood for me.” In “The Cost of You”\, there is a poetic line which says\, “But I spent the cost of you”. It calls to mind\, the Joni Mitchell song\, “Case Of You”. But Joni’s drinking a case of him and still standing on her feet. Mel’s had it up to here. She’s done. \nSirsy plays over 200 shows a year\, bringing their indie rock sound to the masses and are about to expand nationally. “Coming Into Frame” will bring them beyond their east coast/mid-west comfort zone and into new territory including the south\, and west coast. You will normally find them in the headline slot but they have also been special guests of such musical stalwarts as Grace Potter and the Nocturnals\, Maroon5\, Train\, RaRaRiot\, Boys Like Girls\, Third Eye Blind\, Lifehouse\, Blues Traveler\, Cheap Trick\, and many more. \nAlthough the lyrics can be a little dark or introspective and the power of Sirsy can get pretty intense\, “there is no sadness there”\, Mel says. “On stage we radiate joy. It’s just us being free and playing music.”

SUMMARY:The Falconers CD Release Party
DESCRIPTION:By Chris Kocher\, Pressconnect.com at Gannett:\nA CD release for “Red Roots” will be celebrated Wednesday night at McGirk’s Irish Pub in Chenango Bridge\, two years after guitarist JimmyJohn McCabe and upright bassist Bess Greenberg met by chance. Their bands at the time — Whiskey Bones and Milkweed\, respectively — formed a spontaneous jam session during a midweek gig at the Belmar in Binghamton\, and that’s when the creative sparks started to fly. \nLittle preview here….\n \n“Jim was yelling out the chords to me. I jumped up there to see if I could hold it down with these guys\,” Greenberg recalled in a recent interview. “I was very\, very new to the bass\, and I enjoyed having to dig deep and play hard.” \nMcCabe — perhaps best known in the region for his stint in 1990s alt-rock collective Yolk —understood Greenberg’s talent even before she did\, and he persuaded her to try both songwriting and lead vocals. \nGreenberg was hardly a musical novice\, though: She grew up in Vestal taking part in a family project called Buddy’s Band\, which focused on folk classics and performed (among other places) at Binghamton’s long-running Cranberry Coffeehouse. Her brother\, Jed\, also toured for a while as a bass player with folk/rock stalwarts Donna the Buffalo. Full Story here \nMcGirk’s is very proud to be the host as these amazing artists release their first album. We are also having Muckles Ink at the pub for some live screen printing! \nA Little bit about this band….. The Falconers are an uplifting\, heavy hitting indie duo consisting Jimmyjohn McCabe (acoustic guitar and vocals\, formerly of Yolk) and Bess Greenberg (upright bass and vocals\, formerly of Milkweed). The Falconers were born out of textured harmonies\, a driving rhythm and passionate swells that unearth resilience. Tightly crafted\, with influences that range from Joni Mitchell and the Indigo Girls to the Foo Fighters and Pixies\, their music provokes and inspires the spirit. The Falconers will lift your soul\, move your feet and remind us that we are all survivors still fighting to hold on to our hearts. (from thefalconersmusic.com)

SUMMARY:Not Sold Separately
DESCRIPTION:The dynamic Keough Brothers of ‘The Town Pants’ present their latest gig ‘Not Sold Separately’ playing ‘Whiskey Soaked Covers’! These two put on one fantastic evening\, get August 26th on your calendar folks! \nA little bit about…. \nDAVE: The beginning seeds of the Town Pants were sown for Dave as a child in Gatineau\, Quebec. Late at night at the Keogh family kitchen parties\, and allowed to stay up way past bedtime; Dave with his little brother sat watching and listening to the music that their large family of Irish and Acadian origins played. And so it was that Dave’s first experience of music was then was forever defined that music and a good time should go hand in hand. – Learn more here \nDUANE: Growing up in Ottawa\, and coming from a large family of Irish and Acadian ancestry–music was an integral part of the Keogh and Ward (Acadian side) households. And it’s where both Duane and his brother Dave\, as pajama-clad youngsters first heard traditional music played late into the nights at kitchen parties at home by cousins\, grandads\, uncles\, aunts\, but especially their father. Lorne Keogh also taught Duane how to do superb Elvis impressions before he could count. – Learn more here

SUMMARY:STEEL CITY ROVERS
DESCRIPTION:The Steel City Rovers have carved out a healthy place within a genre that is both strict and forgiving.\nWATCH ‘THE 7 BEER ITCH’\n\nMusical forgiveness was easy to grant when they played an extremely funky version of a tune. The freedom of being able to blend styles\, musical idioms\, and beats with alternate instrumentation is remarkable. No need to try to be “pure” when the world’s smorgasbord of music is enticing and tempting you in so many ways. \nThe test of authenticity came near the end of the set. The Steel City Rovers performed an a capella song with multiple verses and vocal harmonies that reminded me of an Irish pub song.

SUMMARY:Great Guinness® Toast
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time again! The Great Guinness Toast is Friday\, February 19th and Broome County Celtic Pipes & Drums will again be touring local bars and establishments to celebrate and raise money for charity. Their last stop of the evening is of course here at McGirk’s and The Reveler’s will be playing – what a night this will be! \nPlease join us\, along with organizers from A.L. George\, for the celebration. Whether this is your first tour or a yearly tradition\, you don’t want to miss it as a fun time is always had. Check out Broome County Celtic Pipes & Drum Band’s Facebook page for their whole tour. \nWhat is ‘The Great Guinness® Toast’?  \nWe found Bruce of Brews said it best on http://philly.thedrinknation.com/ back in 2011….. \n“Every year beer lovers all over the country raise their pint glasses in unison to toast the world’s most popular Irish stout\, Guinness. Although the act of drinking Guinness itself isn’t a unique one with an estimated ten million daily participants\, it’s one particular moment every February that catches the attention of fans world wide. . \nWhat allegedly started in a Pittsburgh Irish pub in the early 90’s\, the Great Guinness Toast is an attempt each year to break the world record for largest simultaneous beer toast. Since then the tradition has caught on\, and on the third Friday of February each year bar patrons nationwide raise their glasses at the same time\, defeating the previous years record. \nThough (as far as we know) the record isn’t actually recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records itself\, according to participating establishments nation wide almost half a million drunkards banded together for the event in 2001. \nThis year’s toast takes place this evening at 11pm\, and with St. Patty’s day just a month away\, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to head down to your favorite Irish pub to salute the two and a half century old beer.”
